The Tomb Of Sharif Osman Need Conservation

In the forest reserve of Kudat and Kota Marudu lies the tomb of Sharif Osman as well as the other people who had died fighting including the British soldiers. According to the Ketua Kampong of Kg Sharif Osman in Kota Marudu, En Injin, it was not Sharif Osman because Sharif Osman had passed away. It was his son name, Sharif Rom. It started with a misunderstanding with Rajah Brooke, the White Rajah of Sarawak over that of Sharif Rom's wife who is the daughter of the Sultan of Sulu. The British had wanted to take the picture of Sharif Rom's wife who was claimed to have some extraordinary appearance in that when she ate anything you could see the color of the food in her throat. However Sharif Rom disagreed and had only agreed to take the picture of the palm of his hand. So the misunderstanding started and Rajah Brook told Sharif Rom to prepare for a battle and make himself a fort or a stronghold at Marudu. The British Armada fired from Pulau Mantanani, an island off Kota Belud, southwest of Kudat. Sharif Rom was said to be very fierce and cruel and he had instructed his men to hang the testicles of the British soldiers who had died. In the cementry at the forest reserve lies Sharif Rom and his followers as well as the British soldiers who had died. Rajah Brook was called by the Sultan of Brunei to engage with the rebellion from Sharif Dom. Rajah Brook was given the piece of land now called Sarawak for his success in defeating Sharif Dom and his men. So starts the White Rajah dynasty in Sarawak. The Ketua Kampong of Kg Sharif Osman said that they were under the Sultanate of Brunei before the Independence. The Sulu Sultanate came through the marriage of the daughter to Sharif Rom. The tomb and cemetary is not well looked after despite the visits by tourists to the area. You will miss the are if that was your first visit. The place must be preserved for the future generation to inherit as it is part of the history for Sabah. The Sabah Muzium and Historical Department of UMS had visited the area but not much had been done as was seen through the lack of sign-board and information and road signs. Even the road entrance did not mention the Tomb of Sharif Osman but called Jalan Ranau. For those who do not know may think that it is the road to Ranau, a town in the Interior. It is high time that we do something about our very own history. The British could have taken the surname when they mentioned Sharif Osman which could have come from Sharif Rom Osman.Sharif is a name given to people who is knowledgeable is very much revered by the local community.

  1. Sorry my friend..
Pengiran Usop, the Bendahara of Sultan of Brunei was the one married to Sultan Sulu. I guess half of the written note is wrong.

  2. Again, Sherif Usman is the person who provided all the guns and powders to most of the Iranun to raid and became one of the notorious raider in maritime history.

The pirate sold each slave for 25 indian rupies each to Sherif Usman who later sell them for 100 indian rupies each to Pengiran Usop.

Pengiran Usop sold them for 200 rupies each at Brunei. If they fail to sell to foreigner (who prefer male labor at their yard) then most of them are trafficked back to Sultan Sulu and His Sultanate.

The Momogun's curse them for raiding the Bandau or Marudu. Now, Sherif Usman died because he was afflicted by the Kandawali curse by one of the Aki of the Momoguns. The villant died in a pitiful way. That is why no road was given to promote him in anyway.

    Thank you

  5. Hello Man from Borneo,

I agree that Sharif Osman should be made a local hero for he ruled Marudu, if not this part of Borneo then. He was a ruler, no doubt about that. He should therefore be given a place in the history of Sabah. I believe he is much more qualified then Mat Salleh who in my opinion is just an unruly rebel.

Part of your story cannot be true because James Brooke became Rajah of Sarawak on 24 September 1841, well before the British raided Marudu. The Battle of Marudu was dated 18 August 1845.

    Notwithstanding, I enjoyed your blog.

  7. Hello,
I've written and published a dissertation on Syarif Osman of Marudu. The book should also found in public liberies in Kota Marudu and Kota Kinabalu as I have sent them a few. It is called "Marudu 1845: The Destruction and Reconstruction of a Coastal State in Borneo".
Inside the book, there is also a collection of oral local history with different reports.
I agree, that the place (tomb and fortress area) should be protected urgently. Some archeological research should be done - and it would be nice to have a visitor centre with exhibitions (the should be items to show like canons, pictures, weapons...)

  8. i love to see the reconstruction of Syarif Osman forts in Marudu where as Dr Bianca Gerlich suggestion should have visitor centre with exhibitions etc.. What intrigue me the most was the flag of Syarif Osman almost the same with the flag of Pengiran Abdul Rauf Bin Pengiran Abdul Rajit the Raja of Mengkabong... We should welcome more historical research and publication about North Borneo historical figure ...

    1. Your story caught my interest. I'm the disendant of Sharif Pompugan. What we understood, Sharif Pompugan is the brother in law of Sharif Osman (Sharif Osman married to Pumpugan's sister) and Army Gereral of him. Wonder if we can trace some family line of them.
